Chicago, Il, 2013-10-25 — /travelprnews.com/ — Lincoln Park Zoo’s innovative science-learning iPad and iPhone app Observe to Learn was presented with a Superior Achievement Award by the Illinois Association of Museums (IAM) at a ceremony held during the IAM Annual Conference in Peoria on October 18.
“The Lincoln Park Zoo is leading the profession with this use of technology,” said Martha Jane Downey, IAM’s awards chair. “This is a remarkable learning tool that will be used worldwide.”
Observe to Learn is a free app, offered in multiple languages, designed to provide youth an opportunity to learn about the natural world through self-directed, animal behavior (ethology) studies. Developed by educators at the zoo’s Hurvis Center for Learning Innovation and Collaboration, the app gives participants an opportunity to step into the shoes of an animal behavior scientist to conduct their own investigation. Participants can study their favorite animals anywhere, anytime, at their local zoo, park, backyard or even
a pet in their living room.
“This is an innovative way to make science more accessible to kids, and also provides teachers with a valuable tool,” explained Leah Melber, PhD, senior director of the Hurvis Center. “We are excited to see how far and wide this application is being utilized with downloads taking place throughout the US, but also Australia, France, Singapore, and even Kuwait. We will continue to offer the app in more languages as demand dictates.”
