Freight volumes at Leipzig/Halle Airport, Germany’s second-largest cargo hub, are growing significantly for the eleventh year in succession.
Schkeuditz, Germany, 2015-8-25 — /Travel PR News/ — The airport was able to set a new absolute record in July with freight volumes totalling 84,397.5 tonnes. This figure represented an increase of 7.7 percent over the same month in the previous year. July was already the third record-setting month in 2015.
Overall, the volume of cargo grew by 8.5 percent to a figure of 564,778 tonnes between January and July.
Leipzig/Halle Airport: 24/7 for cargo flights and direct links to European road and railway networks
With annual figures totalling more than 910,700 tonnes in 2014, Leipzig/Halle Airport is the fifth largest cargo hub in Europe. The airport has a 24-hour operating permit for cargo flights and direct connections to the trans-European motorway and railway networks. As a result, Leipzig/Halle provides ideal conditions for transporting goods by road and rail. There are two parallel runways, each 3,600 metres long, and they can be used independently of each other in CAT III b conditions. The airport also has a modern handling terminal for large animals, the Animal Export Center, and a veterinary border inspection post.
DHL has been operating its European hub at the airport since 2008. Leipzig/Halle Airport is also the home base for Aerologic, a joint venture between DHL Express and Lufthansa Cargo.
Two Antonov 124-100 aircraft has been permanently stationed at Leipzig/Halle since 2006 as part of the SALIS Project (Strategic Interim Solution).
Ruslan Salis GmbH, a cooperation arrangement between the Volga-Dnepr Group and the Antonov Design Bureau, opened the only European maintenance base for Antonov 124-100 aircraft in January 2007. A subsidiary of the Volga-Dnepr Group – Volga Dnepr Technics – has been using a newly constructed hangar as its maintenance base since 2012. This company has been operating under the Aircraft Maintenance and Engineering Service GmbH (AMTES GmbH) name since this year. The airport also operates regular freight charter flights and a scheduled service to Moscow (operated by Air Bridge Cargo).
Cargo flights operate to approx. 60 destinations in more than 30 countries from Leipzig/Halle Airport at the moment.
Leipzig/Halle Airport is a subsidiary of Mitteldeutsche Airport Holding. 2,331,399 passengers and 910,708 tonnes of air freight passed through the airport in 2014. This makes Leipzig/Halle Airport Germany’s second-largest for cargo.
The airport is connected to the A 9 and A 14 motorways and has a railway station integrated within the central terminal. Passengers can reach the check-in area directly from the railway station and multi-storey car park.
