Kansas City International Airport keeps disabled parking spaces available with the help of Variety KC

Kansas City, MO, 2018-Feb-08 — /Travel PR News/ — The Kansas City Aviation Department strives to make Kansas City International Airport as accessible and inclusive as possible for the disabled. To that end, it has reserved hundreds of close-in disabled parking spaces in Garage, Circle and Economy parking. As is the case in other venues, sometimes disabled-parking spaces are taken by others with no disabilities. To further notify drivers that the spaces are reserved for the disabled and support children with special needs, the City of Kansas City, Missouri, and its Aviation Department have teamed up with Variety KC in posting supplemental signs at disabled spaces to remind drivers of the importance to reserve the spaces for those with challenges.

Kansas City International Airport is the most recent area partner to support children with special needs by using the Variety KC parking signs. The signs, featuring photos of actual Variety Kids, have a gentle reminder for non-disabled drivers to “Keep It Free – Think of Me.” This effort will not only make parking easier for those who need it, it will free up KCI Airport Police by reducing the number of tickets issued. Variety Children’s Charity of Greater Kansas City provides children with developmental disabilities the adaptive equipment and opportunities they need for activity and inclusion. Variety is a volunteer-driven organization committed to bettering the quality of life for special needs children. At the heart of Variety’s achievements are the remarkable contributions of people and organizations in the community.

“Thank you KCI for promoting inclusion and championing for those with special needs in our community,” said Deb Wiebrecht, Executive Director of Variety KC. “The signs send a caring message for travelers in and out of the airport.”

“It is imperative that all buildings in Kansas City have adequate and safe parking spaces for those with disabilities,” said Councilwoman Heather Hall.  “I am honored to partner with Variety KC and KCI to offer more, safe parking for those who need it. It will also serve as a gentle reminder for non-disabled drivers to ‘Keep It Free – Think of Me.’”

The Kansas City Aviation Department is an Enterprise Fund Department of the City of Kansas City, Mo., and is supported wholly by airport user charges. No general fund tax revenues are used for the administration, operation, maintenance or promotion of the airports in the system. Visit flykci.com for more information.
