Minor Hotels appoints the former Tivoli Alvor Algarve Resort general manager to lead the historic luxury hotel where the Tivoli brand began in 1933

(NEWS) LISBON, Portugal, 2026-Sep-02 — /Travel PR News/ — Jason Marques has moved from Portugal’s Algarve to the heart of Lisbon to take charge of one of the country’s most established luxury hotels, becoming General Manager of Tivoli Avenida Liberdade from 1 September 2026.
The appointment places Marques at the helm of the property where the Tivoli story began in 1933. Located on Lisbon’s Avenida da Liberdade and now part of The Leading Hotels of the World, the hotel remains an important flagship for Minor Hotels and its Tivoli Hotels & Resorts brand as the group balances heritage-led luxury with changing expectations among international city travellers.
Marques arrives after two years as General Manager of Tivoli Alvor Algarve Resort, where he joined Minor Hotels in January 2024. In Lisbon, his brief will include further developing the guest experience while preserving the identity of a hotel that has been closely associated with Portuguese hospitality for more than nine decades.
“Taking on the role of General Manager at Tivoli Avenida Liberdade is an enormous privilege,” Marques said in announcing the move. He described the hotel as part of Lisbon’s identity and said his aim is to honour its legacy while working with the team to continue raising the guest experience and service standards.
The role brings Marques back to hands-on hotel leadership after a career that has moved between resorts, city hotels, openings and corporate operations. He started in hospitality in 2003 at Pine Cliffs, a Luxury Collection Hotel & Resort in the Algarve, following studies in Sustainable Tourism at INUAF – Instituto Superior Dom Afonso III.
His international career expanded in 2012 when he joined Starwood Hotels & Resorts in Algeria as Front Office Manager at Le Méridien Oran Hotel & Convention Centre. He later moved into rooms leadership there and at Sheraton Club des Pins Hotel & Resort before relocating to the Seychelles in 2016 as Executive Assistant General Manager at Le Méridien Fisherman’s Cove.
Marques subsequently became Resort Manager of Constance Halaveli Maldives in 2018 and returned to the Seychelles in 2020 to lead the opening of a new Marriott International resort as General Manager and Owner’s Representative. He later joined Marriott International’s London headquarters as Senior Manager, Franchise Operations for Europe, Africa and the Middle East, overseeing operational performance across 116 hotels in Southern Europe.
That combination of resort operations, hotel openings and multi-property oversight gives Minor Hotels an experienced operator for a property with an unusually prominent place in its brand history. Tivoli Avenida Liberdade was the first Tivoli hotel and remains a reference point for the brand as it expands beyond Portugal into markets across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the Americas.
For Marques, the Lisbon appointment represents both a promotion within Minor Hotels and a shift from a large Algarve resort environment to a landmark urban luxury property. His challenge will be to maintain the hotel’s long-established character while finding new ways to keep the experience relevant in a competitive Lisbon market where heritage, design, food and beverage, wellness and personalised service increasingly shape luxury hotel choice.
