Japan Airlines will support Yokohama’s 2027 horticultural expo as a Gold Partner, using aircraft, inflight media, loyalty rewards and staff training to connect passengers with the six-month event.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Japan Airlines is a Gold Partner of GREEN×EXPO 2027 in Yokohama, supporting both the event’s momentum-building and venue-operation projects.
  • JAL plans to introduce a specially painted GREEN×EXPO aircraft from November 2026 and promote the event through inflight media and a dedicated website.
  • JAL Mileage Bank members can redeem 2,500 miles for an admission ticket through 18 March 2027, rising to 3,000 miles from the expo’s opening day.
  • The airline will also provide hospitality and accessibility training for venue staff and run sustainability activities focused on domestically produced SAF and environmental education.

Japan Airlines is turning its sponsorship of GREEN×EXPO 2027 into a passenger-facing travel campaign, with a specially painted aircraft, inflight promotion, loyalty-ticket redemptions and environmental programmes planned ahead of the international horticultural exposition in Yokohama.

The JAL Group has joined the event as a Gold Partner supporting both its “Momentum Building Project” and “Venue Operation Project.” The expo will take place at the former Kamiseya Communication Facility in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, from 19 March to 26 September 2027. The official event overview says the approximately 100-hectare site is expected to attract 15 million visitors through physical and other participation formats, with more than 10 million paying visitors anticipated.

A GREEN×EXPO aircraft from November

The most visible part of JAL’s programme will take to the air before the expo opens. The airline plans to introduce a specially painted aircraft from November 2026 featuring flowers and greenery intended to represent the vitality of the Earth. JAL has not yet published the aircraft type, launch date or operating schedule, saying those details will be released later through its dedicated GREEN×EXPO website.

Passengers will also encounter the expo through JAL’s inflight channels. The airline plans coverage in its SKYWARD inflight magazine, on personal entertainment screens on domestic and international flights and on forward cabin screens on domestic services. A special JAL GREEN×EXPO website has also been launched with ticket information and content highlighting Yokohama as a destination.

The strategy turns the airline’s network into part of the expo’s tourism marketing. Rather than limiting its contribution to sponsorship branding, JAL is using aircraft, onboard media and its customer platform to put the event in front of travelers during the months leading up to the opening.

Expo tickets become a mileage redemption

JAL Mileage Bank members can also use miles to obtain GREEN×EXPO admission tickets through the airline’s Experience via Miles platform. Exchanges opened on 31 August 2026.

Tickets redeemed through 18 March 2027 require 2,500 miles each. From 19 March, when the expo opens, the redemption level increases to 3,000 miles per ticket. The arrangement gives the airline a direct way to convert loyalty currency into attendance at the event rather than a flight or conventional travel reward.

JAL staff expertise will extend into the venue

JAL’s involvement will continue after visitors reach Yokohama. The airline says it will provide customer-hospitality and accessibility training to GREEN×EXPO staff, volunteers and other stakeholders, drawing on cabin-crew service experience and training delivered through JAL Business Career Support.

The objective is to help venue teams accommodate a wide range of visitors, including travelers arriving from overseas. That role makes the partnership partly operational, with airline service practices being adapted for use inside the expo rather than remaining confined to airports and aircraft.

SAF campaign links household cooking oil with aviation

Environmental activities form another major strand of the partnership. JAL plans events during GREEN×EXPO under the theme “Small Drops Toward a Brighter Future,” building on its “Let’s Fly with Used Cooking Oil” project.

The programme, launched in 2024, collects household used cooking oil for use as feedstock for Sustainable Aviation Fuel, or SAF. In its 31 August announcement, JAL said collection initiatives had expanded with support from 111 local governments and 235 stores. During the expo, people bringing used cooking oil to designated collection points are expected to receive incentives such as miles or entries into prize drawings.

The airline is also targeting younger audiences through environmental education. JAL is supporting the elementary-school idea contest Mirai Action STATIONS, which asks children to consider actions for the future of aviation with SAF as a central theme, while school visits are also planned.

Expo partnership sits inside JAL Vision 2035

The airline is positioning the programme within JAL Vision 2035, its long-term management strategy aimed at creating what it calls a sustainable and well-being future while balancing social value with business growth. JAL President and Group CEO Mitsuko Tottori has described environmental sustainability as one of the foundations of that strategy.

GREEN×EXPO itself is built around coexistence with nature. The official event plan says the horticultural exposition will use flowers and greenery to explore sustainable living, green infrastructure, regional revitalisation and solutions to social and environmental challenges.

For travelers, JAL’s programme means the expo will begin appearing in the journey months before the gates open in Yokohama. From a special aircraft and inflight content to mileage redemptions and venue training, the airline is using multiple parts of its travel ecosystem to connect passengers with one of Japan’s major international events of 2027.
