Hotel de Russie unveils its newly refurbished garden revived to Valdier’s original 19th-century eclectic style

London, UK, 2021-Jul-07 — /Travel PR News/ — Hotel de Russie celebrates warm summer days by welcoming guests to the new garden, refurbished to its original splendour as envisioned by architect Giuseppe Valadier in the 1820s. Since its creation, the garden of Hotel de Russie has remained a central part of Roman life, a favourite meeting place where locals mingle with Heads of State and Hollywood stars, artists draw inspiration and travelers from all over simply sit to enjoy a drink in one of the city’s most lovely corners.

The magnificent garden, described in the 1981 Carta dei Giardini Storici (Historical Garden Document) as a “work of art, cultural heritage, architectural and environmental resource”, presents itself today as a stunning natural space characterized by a central axis and neoclassical architectural components – terraces, balustrades, grottos, basins, fountains, nymphaeum and statues – set amongst a rich botanical frame.

The harmony of these elements, enriched by the sound of fountains, enhances the garden’s scenic atmosphere and casts the same spell on today’s guests as that which inspired distinguished artists, such as Picasso, Cocteau and Stravinsky who stayed at Hotel de Russie. At dusk, elegantly placed lighting emphasises the garden’s beauty and creates a magical evening setting.

The delicate fragrances and bold colours of the plants and flowers, meticulously positioned to highlight the monumental garden and the graceful Roman walls and statues, accompany romantic moonlit moments and open air dining at Le Jardin de Russie restaurant in a breath-taking theatrical setting.

Following a year-long restoration, the garden has been revived to Valdier’s original 19th-century eclectic style. The space is not to be seen simply as a welcoming green oasis; it is an historical work of exterior architecture bounded by a “fifth botany”. The architectural scheme perfectly emulates the grand ascent to the nearby Pincian Hill overlooking Piazza del Popolo. The latter is another design envisioned by Valadier and proof that the garden is its forerunner, on a smaller scale.

“Firstly, I would like to sincerely thank the Vaselli family who is gifting Rome and the Hotel de Russie a breath-taking garden, more beautiful than it has ever been” states Sir Rocco Forte, Chairman of Rocco Forte Hotels. “The restoration and efforts behind this project are a sign of great sensitivity and foresight. This place is a true privilege both for us who work here and for the guests who want to enjoy the marvellous outdoors from dusk until dawn.”

“We would like to thank, first and foremost, Rocco Forte Hotels who made the garden available for the restoration works. Also Architects Pietro Paolo Lateano and Sofia Varoli Piazza as well as the Crucianelli di Tolentino organization which carried on with the works whilst maintaining strict safety protocols on site in the midst of the health emergency” commented Matteo Marenghi Vaselli, Managing Director of Albergo di Russia SpA, company that owns the property.
