TAUPO, New Zealand, 2013-03-20 — /travelprnews.com/ — Hilton Lake Taupo will observe and celebrate Earth Hour 2013 on Saturday, March 23, 2013 from 8:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. local time. Individuals, businesses, governments and communities around the world will turn out their lights for to show their support for environmentally sustainable action. Hilton Lake Taupo is just one of the many 3,900 hotels that are part of the Hilton Worldwide portfolio of brands that will take part in the event.

“We are pleased to partake in this global effort that joins organisations and individuals around the world to symbolically switch off their lights in support of energy conservation” said Clinton Farley, hotel manager. “This is our fourth year of participation and we encourage our guests and neighbours to join in on the movement” he added. This year the hotel and restaurant Bistro Lago are focussing on going beyond the hour. Bistro Lago restaurant head chef Jason Lewis has created a sustainable menu option, sourcing the freshest and where possible locally sourced organic produce.

Earth Hour will be celebrated at Hilton Lake Taupo and Bistro Lago through a variety of activities including:

  • Bistro Lago candlelit dining experience during Earth Hour and a sustainable menu offering for the week of March 23 to April 1, 2013.
  • Encouraging guests to participate by switching off all non-essential lighting and appliances and switching off exterior flood lighting on buildings.

Organised by World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Earth Hour began in 2007 as a way for individuals to show how simple steps can make a significant impact on reducing greenhouse gases and addressing climate change. The event has turned into a movement. Earth Hour 2012 took place in more than 7001 cities and towns in 152 countries and territories across all seven continents. Hundreds of millions of people switched their lights off for an hour, and the campaign experienced its biggest growth since 2009, sending a powerful message for action on climate change.

Hilton Worldwide is the first major multi-brand hospitality company to make sustainability measurement a brand standard and recently earned ISO 9001 and 14001 certifications for quality and environmental management – one of the largest volume certifications awarded for commercial buildings. As part of that standard, Hilton Worldwide-branded properties commit to continuous improvements to their overall sustainability results each year. Across the portfolio, Hilton Worldwide has a made a five-year commitment, from 2009 to 2014, to reduce energy consumption by 20%, CO2 emissions by 20%, waste output by 20% and water consumption by 10%.
