Goa leads Agoda festive-weekend searches as Indian travelers mix beach breaks with Asian city escapes

Search data for the Rakshabandhan and Janmashtami long weekends puts Goa first domestically, while Singapore leads international interest across both festive breaks.

Goa ranks as the most searched domestic destination on Agoda for both the Rakshabandhan and Janmashtami long weekends in 2026.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Goa is the most searched domestic destination on Agoda for both the Rakshabandhan and Janmashtami long weekends in 2026.
  • Singapore leads international accommodation searches for both festive breaks, with Bali also ranking among the top three on each occasion.
  • Rakshabandhan searches favor Goa, Mumbai and Puri domestically, while Janmashtami searches put Goa, Udaipur and Mumbai in the top three.
  • Both festivals fall on Fridays in 2026, creating natural three-day weekend opportunities for many travelers.

Two Friday festivals are giving Indian travelers natural opportunities for late-summer long weekends in 2026, and Agoda search data suggests many are looking to split their choices between familiar domestic escapes and relatively accessible international cities.

Goa ranks as the most searched domestic destination on Agoda for both the Rakshabandhan and Janmashtami weekends, while Singapore leads international accommodation searches for both breaks. The findings are based on searches made between 1 May and 31 July 2026 for stays during the respective festive weekends, according to Agoda’s published search analysis.

The calendar is particularly favorable to short trips this year. Raksha Bandhan falls on Friday, 28 August, while Janmashtami is on Friday, 4 September, dates also listed in the Supreme Court of India’s 2026 holiday calendar. For travelers able to take advantage of the festivals as days off, each creates a three-day Friday-to-Sunday window without the need for a longer period away from work.

Goa, Mumbai and Puri lead Rakshabandhan searches

For the Rakshabandhan weekend, Goa is followed by Mumbai and Puri among domestic searches. The three destinations offer markedly different short-break propositions: Goa during the monsoon is associated with greener inland landscapes and waterfalls, Mumbai provides a dense urban mix of food, culture and entertainment, while Puri combines its coastline with the religious importance of the Jagannath Temple.

Agoda says the broader domestic top 15 also includes Ooty, Munnar, Lonavala and Varanasi, pointing to demand that stretches from hill-country retreats to spiritual destinations. The spread suggests that travelers are not concentrating on a single holiday format, even for a short festive break.

Internationally, Singapore, Bali and Bangkok form the top three for Rakshabandhan. Other Asian destinations appearing in the top 15 include Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City and Tokyo, while London and Paris show that some travelers are also considering longer-haul trips despite the relatively short holiday window.

Udaipur rises for the Janmashtami break

Goa remains in first place for Janmashtami, but the domestic ranking shifts behind it. Udaipur takes second place, bringing its lakes and Mewar-era palaces into the mix, while Mumbai again appears among the top three.

The wider Janmashtami domestic list includes Pondicherry, Chennai, Jaipur and Leh. That combination spans coastal breaks, heritage cities and high-altitude Himalayan travel, further reinforcing the variety visible in the search data. Leh stands out as the most geographically distinctive option, with its Buddhist monasteries and stark mountain setting offering a very different experience from India’s coastal and urban destinations.

For outbound travel over Janmashtami, Singapore again ranks first, followed by Dubai and Bali. Manila, Kuala Lumpur, Phuket, the Maldives, Hong Kong and Hanoi also feature in the international top 15, concentrating much of the visible demand within Asia and the Indian Ocean region.

Festivals are becoming short-break travel triggers

The pattern fits a broader relationship between festivals and travel in India. Earlier in 2026, Agoda reported that 19% of Indian respondents in its Travel Outlook research expected to take a spiritually motivated trip during the year, the highest proportion among the Asian markets surveyed. The company has also previously recorded sharp accommodation-search increases around major religious events, suggesting that faith, family occasions and leisure travel increasingly overlap in trip planning.

Gaurav Malik, Agoda’s country director for the Indian Subcontinent and Indian Ocean Islands, said festive long weekends give travelers an opportunity to take a break without using extended time away from work. He said this year’s searches show interest spanning beaches, culture and nature within India as well as international city breaks across Asia and beyond.

Search data is an indicator of interest rather than confirmed bookings, so the rankings should not be read as a final measure of where travelers will ultimately go. Even so, the results provide a useful snapshot of how Indian travelers are considering two closely spaced festive weekends, with Goa maintaining a strong domestic lead and Singapore emerging as the most consistent international choice.
