Frankfurt Cargo Rises 2.9% as August Passenger Traffic Holds Near 6.3 Million

FRA recorded its busiest month of 2026 despite a slight year-on-year passenger decline, while Fraport’s actively managed airports handled about 24.1 million travellers overall.

FRA recorded its busiest month of 2026 despite a slight year-on-year passenger decline, while Fraport’s actively managed airports handled about 24.1 million travellers overall.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Frankfurt Airport handled around 6.3 million passengers in August 2026, down 0.3% year on year but its highest monthly total of 2026.
  • Cargo volumes at FRA increased 2.9% to 179,400 metric tons, while aircraft movements fell 4.6% to 40,968.
  • Fraport’s 14 Greek airports handled 7.1 million passengers, while Ljubljana posted a 19.3% increase to 222,231 travellers.
  • Across all airports actively managed by Fraport, passenger traffic rose 2.1% year on year to around 24.1 million.

Frankfurt Airport handled around 6.3 million passengers in August 2026, its highest monthly total of the year so far, even as traffic remained broadly flat against last summer and the number of aircraft movements continued to decline.

According to Fraport’s August traffic figures, passenger volume at FRA was 0.3% below August 2025. The month nevertheless produced the airport’s strongest passenger total of 2026, and its two busiest individual days of the year to date each exceeded 220,000 travellers.

The near-flat passenger result came alongside a sharper reduction in flying activity. Frankfurt recorded 40,968 takeoffs and landings during the month, down 4.6% year on year, while total maximum takeoff weights fell 1.6% to around 2.6 million metric tons.

Cargo strengthens as passenger growth pauses

Cargo provided the clearer growth signal at Frankfurt. Airfreight and airmail volumes increased 2.9% year on year to 179,400 metric tons in August, extending the positive cargo trend seen in July.

The contrast with the previous month is notable. In July 2026, Frankfurt handled about 6.2 million passengers, up 1.4% year on year, while cargo increased 0.9% to 180,622 metric tons. Aircraft movements in July were down 3.2% to 41,286. August therefore brought a higher absolute passenger total than July, but a weaker year-on-year comparison and a steeper decline in flight movements.

For airport operators and airlines, that combination highlights how headline passenger totals can move differently from flight activity. Frankfurt’s August passenger count was only marginally below the prior-year level even though takeoffs and landings fell by more than four times that percentage.

International portfolio keeps Fraport growing

Beyond Frankfurt, most airports in Fraport’s international portfolio recorded passenger growth during August. Ljubljana Airport posted the strongest percentage increase among the airports highlighted by the group, with traffic up 19.3% to 222,231 passengers.

Fraport’s airports in Fortaleza and Porto Alegre handled a combined 1.3 million passengers, 4.9% more than a year earlier. Lima Airport also grew 4.9% to roughly 2.4 million passengers.

Peak-season leisure traffic remained particularly significant in the Mediterranean portfolio. Fraport’s 14 Greek airports welcomed 7.1 million passengers in August, up 5.1%, while the Bulgarian Black Sea airports of Burgas and Varna handled a combined 875,035 passengers, an increase of 2.1%.

Antalya Airport was the exception among the major international locations listed in the release, with passenger traffic slipping 0.9% to 5.9 million.

Group traffic reaches 24.1 million passengers

Across all airports actively managed by Fraport, August passenger traffic increased 2.1% year on year to around 24.1 million. That was slightly below the 2.2% group growth recorded in July, when the network handled approximately 23.4 million passengers.

The figures underline the different dynamics across Fraport’s portfolio at the height of the European summer season: Frankfurt remained at very high absolute volumes but without year-on-year passenger growth, while international airports in Slovenia, Greece, Brazil, Peru and Bulgaria provided much of the group’s expansion.

Fraport publishes current and historical airport statistics through its digital TrafficSheet and traffic figures archive, allowing monthly results to be compared across Frankfurt and the wider group.
