Dubai’s short- and medium-haul connectivity is moving closer to full strength as flydubai rebuilds its schedule while continuing to add destinations and seats. The carrier says it has restored operations to 85% of its network and is now serving more than 125 destinations in 56 countries, with an average of 2,200 weekly flights through its home hub at Dubai International Airport (DXB).

The figures, set out in flydubai’s 14 September network update, show that the recovery is not limited to reinstating previous services. The airline is also increasing frequencies in markets where demand is strengthening and adding new points to a network that it says includes almost 100 destinations that previously had no, or very limited, direct links with Dubai and the wider UAE.

Bangkok growth and a new gateway to Nepal

Southeast and South Asia are among the clearest examples of that expansion. flydubai began serving Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) in July and is now moving the route from its initial daily pattern towards three non-stop flights a day. The airline says the triple-daily schedule will be in place in November, giving travellers more choice between Dubai and the Thai capital while feeding connections across the wider network.

The next new destination arrives sooner. On 23 September, flydubai is scheduled to begin daily flights between Dubai and Pokhara International Airport (PHH), making Pokhara its second destination in Nepal after Kathmandu. According to the airline’s route announcement, the service will depart from Terminal 3 at DXB and will make flydubai the first UAE airline to offer a direct link to Pokhara. For leisure travellers, the route opens a more direct gateway to western Nepal and the Annapurna region, while also broadening access for visiting-friends-and-relatives and business traffic.

Recent network additions and resumptions have also included Aleppo in Syria and Benghazi in Libya. During the summer season, flydubai operated 11 seasonal destinations, with Mediterranean leisure markets such as Bodrum, Corfu, Mykonos, Santorini and Tivat among those highlighted by the carrier as popular with UAE-based customers and connecting passengers.

More capacity around the Dubai hub

The airline is also adding seats on established year-round routes. Almaty, Bishkek and Tashkent are among the markets receiving additional capacity, while flydubai says forward bookings after the summer point to continued demand into the winter season. The strategy gives the carrier room to combine leisure-led seasonal flying with higher-frequency services on routes that support business, visiting-friends-and-relatives and connecting traffic.

That connectivity is amplified by flydubai’s partnership with Emirates. The airlines say their combined network gives customers access to more than 214 unique destinations in over 100 countries and creates more than 4,600 connection opportunities through Dubai. flydubai operates from both Terminals 2 and 3 at DXB, while codeshare itineraries with Emirates can link passengers across the two carriers’ networks with coordinated connections through the hub.

Ghaith Al Ghaith, flydubai’s Chief Executive Officer, said the airline has focused on safely restoring services while directing extra capacity towards markets showing demand and opening new destinations. He also pointed to the performance of recently launched routes and summer demand as reasons for confidence that the airline can continue rebuilding its network as operating conditions stabilise.

Hamad Obaidalla, Chief Commercial Officer at flydubai, said the current average of 2,200 weekly flights is expected to rise as additional aircraft are received. He described the airline’s priorities as further network development and a return of operations at DXB to pre-disruption levels.

Fleet growth will therefore be central to the next stage of expansion. flydubai currently lists 98 Boeing 737 aircraft in service, comprising 25 Next-Generation 737-800s, 69 Boeing 737 MAX 8s and four Boeing 737 MAX 9s. The airline says it has carried more than 137 million passengers since beginning operations in 2009 and has opened more than 100 routes that previously lacked direct air links to Dubai or service by a UAE national carrier from the city.

Travellers can review current schedules through flydubai’s official timetable, with flights bookable through flydubai.com, the airline’s app, travel shops and travel partners.
