Fitting for new Oktoberfest dirndl / Flights to New York, Charlotte and Hong Kong

2012-09-13 — /travelprnews.com/ — Lufthansa is limbering up for the Oktoberfest and what the Bavarians fondly call the “fifth” season of the year. The Munich crew who wear traditional Bavarian costume during this period will make their first public appearance today. This year’s outfit features a new dirndl created by Angermaier Trachten, a Munich-based company that specialises in traditional costume. The dirndl has been designed in the Lufthansa colours – royal blue, yellow and white. The blouse is made of yellow fabric with a blue floral print, while the skirt is blue-and-white striped and worn with a blue silk apron. For the first time, male flight attendants will wear lederhosen, combined with a janker – the traditional Bavarian jacket – and waistcoat. Their ties will tone in with their colleagues’ dirndls.

The twelve strong Munich-based cabin crew, comprising ten female and two male flight attendants, will take off on Friday, 21 September bound for New York, just over a week before the start of the Oktoberfest. On 28 September, they will depart for Charlotte, and on 3 October for Hong Kong.

It is now more than 50 years since Lufthansa flight attendants first exchanged their uniforms for traditional Bavarian costumes. In 1957, the airline reported: “During the Oktoberfest, Lufthansa stewardesses dressed in dirndls will be attending to the needs of passengers on flights from New York to Hamburg between 17 September and 2 October, and on flights from London to Munich between 21 September and 2 October.” On those routes, blonde flight attendants wore pale blue dirndls, while their dark-haired colleagues were dressed in pink.
