Finavia to renovate Vaasa Airport

2012-08-21 — /travelprnews.com/ — Finavia will launch a renovation of Vaasa Airport’s terminal facilities during the autumn. The renovation will make Vaasa Airport more functional. The goal is to improve passenger service so that Vaasa Airport will competitively and cost effectively meet flight travel needs in the future.

The renovation is estimated to cost EUR 1 million. Finavia has agreed on the development of Vaasa Airport with the City of Vaasa. The city will contribute more than EUR 300,000 to the project.

The investment consists of several measures for improved passenger service and smoother travelling. In the renovation, the existing facility use of the terminal will be changed for more space in the departure and arrival lobbies. This will enable the development of shop and restaurant services, and the introduction of a fourth departure gate. More space will also be provided for the security check process specified by the authorities and which is important for flight safety.

”Vaasa Airport’s passenger volume has developed very positively in recent years. Vaasa is pivotal as a developing airport in Finavia’s airport network. In cooperation with the city, we want to develop the airport’s operations in the future so that it will optimally support business life in the area,” says Director Joni Sundelin at Finavia.

The renovation will begin during autumn 2012. The work will be implemented gradually and completed in 2013.

”The decision of Finavia and the City of Vaasa to invest in the development of Vaasa Airport is a good basis for the future operations of the airport. We find it important that the airport develops according to demand and provides cost-effective services for airlines and air passengers,” says Finavia’s Mikko Komi, Vaasa Airport Manager.

”The city of Vaasa is growing and developing rapidly and it is great that the airport matches the pace. Just as convenient domestic and foreign connections are a critical success factor for us, a functional airport acts as an important gateway to Vaasa,” says Mayor Tomas Häyry.

Air passengers are advised to prepare for the renovation having a potential impact on the operations of Vaasa Airport. Finavia will communicate the potential impact in more detail to the passengers at the terminal and on the website of Vaasa Airport as the renovation progresses.

In addition to the terminal renovation, there are other development projects planned for the Vaasa Airport area. The construction of a logistics terminal around the airport has been planned under the supervision of the government and municipalities.

In 2011, the passenger volume of Finavia’s Vaasa Airport was almost 340,000. International traffic amounted to about one-third of this. In January–July 2012, the passenger volume of the airport has increased by almost 18% compared to the same period in 2011.

Currently, six airlines have frequent route connections to Vaasa Airport: Finnair, Blue1, Golden Air, Flybe, Air Baltic, and Norwegian.
