Field & Stream Lodge Co. plans 2028 openings in Bend and Big Bear as outdoor-hotel brand expands

The brand will convert a 151-room former Shilo Inn on Oregon’s Deschutes River and a 148-room former Holiday Inn Resort in California’s Big Bear Lake market.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Field & Stream Lodge Co. plans to open a 151-room Bend lodge and a 148-room Big Bear lodge in 2028.
  • Both projects are conversions of existing hotels: the former Shilo Inn in Bend and former Holiday Inn Resort Big Bear.
  • The Bend property sits on the Deschutes River less than two miles from downtown, while the Big Bear lodge will be a short walk from Big Bear Lake.
  • The two developments will become the brand’s second and third lodges after its Bozeman, Montana debut.

Field & Stream Lodge Co. is moving beyond its first Montana hotel with two conversion projects aimed squarely at year-round outdoor destinations. The hospitality brand plans to open a 151-room lodge in Bend, Oregon, and a 148-room property in Big Bear, California, in 2028, giving it footholds in both the Pacific Northwest and Southern California mountain-travel markets.

The two projects will become the second and third hotels in the Field & Stream Lodge Co. portfolio. Both involve the renovation of existing properties rather than ground-up construction: the former Shilo Inn in Bend and the former Holiday Inn Resort Big Bear. The company’s locations page now lists both destinations as opening in 2028.

A riverfront base in Bend

The Bend development will occupy a 151-room property directly on the Deschutes River and less than two miles from downtown. Its position puts guests close to a mix of fishing, mountain biking, climbing and winter sports, with Mt. Bachelor and Smith Rock among the best-known outdoor draws in the wider Central Oregon region.

The conversion is designed to extend the brand’s outdoor-oriented lodging concept into a destination where recreation is part of the year-round visitor economy. Field & Stream Lodge Co. said further details about guestrooms, amenities and the opening timetable will be released closer to the property’s debut.

Mac Stormont, senior vice president at Starwood Capital Group, said the Bend and Big Bear projects reflect the partners’ long-term commitment to the brand and their intention to create hotels that work for both travellers and local guests.

Big Bear adds a Southern California mountain market

The 148-room Big Bear project will transform the former Holiday Inn Resort on Village Drive. The existing property includes a restaurant, meeting space, suites, an outdoor pool and a hot tub, while the location is about a 10-minute walk from Big Bear Lake.

For leisure travellers, the setting gives the new lodge access to a broad seasonal mix. Winter demand centres on the ski terrain at Big Bear Mountain Resort, while warmer months bring boating and water sports on the lake as well as mountain biking and an extensive network of hiking and biking trails in the surrounding San Bernardino National Forest.

Scott Ebbott, principal at AJ Capital Partners, said Bend and Big Bear share the qualities that attracted the partners to Bozeman: communities built around outdoor access with activities available across the seasons. He said the brand intends each lodge to reflect its local setting rather than apply an identical design formula across destinations.

Conversions drive the brand’s next stage

Field & Stream Lodge Co. was created by Starwood Capital Group and AJ Capital Partners around the heritage of the Field & Stream outdoor brand, which dates to 1871. The hotel concept is intended for destinations where travellers can combine accommodation with fishing, hiking, skiing, cycling and other outdoor pursuits.

The brand’s first lodge opened in Bozeman, Montana, in 2025. Skift reported that the 179-room Bozeman hotel was also a conversion, having opened in May 2025 in a former Holiday Inn. The Bend and Big Bear deals therefore continue a conversion-led expansion strategy that allows the partners to reposition existing lodging in established recreation markets.

Once both 2028 projects are open, Field & Stream Lodge Co. will have three operating locations across Montana, Oregon and California. The company says it intends to continue expanding nationally, with future sites expected to follow the same broad focus on places where outdoor recreation is central to the visitor experience.
