FAA Reauthorization and Sustainability Mandates to be presented by Christa Fornarotto, FAA Associate Administrator for Airports at 5th Annual Airports Going Green Conference

CHICAGO, 2012-10-16 — /travelprnews.com/ — The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) is pleased to announce that this year’s Airports Going Green Conference will feature FAA Associate Administrator Christa Fornaratto who will discuss FAA’s growing list of sustainability related initiatives. Joining Ms. Fornarotto will be Ralph Thompson, FAA Manager, Airports Planning and Environmental Division.

The FAA has embarked on a number of sustainability initiatives. In 2010, FAA initiated the Sustainable Master Plan Pilot Program which continues at 10 U.S. Airports who are preparing Sustainable Master Plans and Management Plans. The purpose of the program is to reduce environmental impacts, achieve economic benefits, and increase interaction with local communities – and to help the FAA better understand and ultimately develop guidance for airports to develop such programs. And, we’ll hear the FAA’s expectations for the latest round of FAA grant programs just announced.

Most recently, the FAA gathered a group of industry sustainability leaders to develop a synthesis document for airport sponsors to use when considering a waste recycling, reuse, and reduction program. This effort is nearing completion. We’ll learn more about the results of this effort and how it may provide the framework for the FAA in the development of comprehensive waste management guidance.

The FAA is also planning to embark on a similar industry initiative on energy efficiency and management. We’ll learn the status of this effort and how the industry may be able to participate with the FAA.

The FAA Modernization and Reauthorization Act of 2012 included two specific mandates – development of guidance for airports to develop Waste Management Plans and Energy Management Plans in support of future Master Plan efforts.  FAA’s recent initiatives on waste and energy will likely support FAA’s goal towards meeting these sustainability mandates. We’ll learn about FAA’s approach and timing for addressing these programs.

Bring your questions as we learn about these and other FAA sustainability related programs and efforts, including the opportunity for grants and funding for future sustainability related programs and projects,

The FAA’s session on Reauthorization and Sustainability Mandates will be presented on Monday, November 5th from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Join us!
