Earth Day at San Francisco International Airport (SFO): Environmental leadership is part of our DNA at SFO

“Green Screen” campaign invites public to view and vote on sustainability videos created by staff

SAN FRANCISCO, 2017-Apr-26 — /Travel PR News/ — the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is celebrating Earth Day with a first-ever video contest featuring content created by airport employees to tell stories of how SFO strives to be more environmentally sustainable. Titled “Green Screen”, the contest features six videos developed by SFO staff which offer insights into how the Airport reduces waste, conserves water and power, and promotes transit. The public is invited to view and vote for their favorite video and enter for a chance to win a Sustainability Tour of SFO for up to 10 people. Videos, voting, and complete contest terms and conditions can be found: www.flysfo.com/greenscreen.

“Environmental leadership is part of our DNA at SFO,” said Airport Director Ivar C. Satero. “This first-ever crowdsourced public campaign highlights the many ways we contribute to the environment, as well as the passion we have for these efforts. I appreciate the dedication of my staff, and I encourage the public to view these videos and vote for their favorite.”

SFO has long been an industry leader in environmental efforts. Since 1990, the Airport has reduced greenhouse gas emissions from airport-controlled operations by 38%, reduced energy consumption by almost 11,000 megawatt-hours per year, and improved 558 acres of wetlands throughout the Bay Area. SFO has made air conditioning and electrical power available to all parked aircraft, resulting in a reduction of 18,300 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions and saving over 1.8 million gallons of jet fuel annually.1 The Airport also constructed the AirTrain electric light rail system, which eliminated over 600 daily bus trips to shuttle passengers between terminals and the Rental Car Center, and created a Clean Vehicle Policy to promote the adoption and deployment of energy efficient vehicles, by both Airport departments and ground transportation providers, and offers programs to encourage airport employees to take public transit to and from work. 1 FY2010 data

SFO been recognized on multiple occasions for contributions in the field of environmental sustainability. In March 2017, Acterra, a non-profit organization in Silicon Valley dedicated to the promotion of a healthy and sustainable planet, selected SFO for their top sustainability award, the Acterra Business Environmental Award. In the Large Organization category, SFO was honored with the Acterra Award for Sustainability. In its announcement, Acterra cited SFO as a nationally-recognized sustainability leader in the aviation industry for its history of climate action and sustainability reporting. In 2013 Airports Council International (ACI), the foremost advocate for airport operators worldwide, recognized SFO for its Climate Action Plan, which outlines a variety of efforts intended to reduce greenhouse gas emissions related to airport operations. The following year, ACI honored SFO for its Recovery Action Plan, which ensures the protection of two endangered species on a 180-acre undeveloped area of the Airport. In 2016, SFO was awarded Level 3 Airport Carbon Accreditation by ACI, becoming the first airport in California and only the second in North America certified at this level.
