Dresden Airport welcomes passenger no. 20,000,000 in new terminal

2012-08-14 — /travelprnews.com/ — Dresden International Airport has reached another milestone in its history. This morning it welcomed its 20 millionth passenger since the new terminal opened on 25 March 2001. The lucky passenger was Manuel Sandner from Stuttgart.

The 26-year-old had been visiting his girlfriend in Dresden and was flying Germanwings on a business trip to Cologne Bonn. To mark the occasion, passenger no. 20,000,000 was given a Germanwings voucher for a free flight for two anywhere on the airline’s route network.

Germanwings has operated the Dresden – Cologne Bonn route since 30 March 2003. It has also been flying between Dresden and Stuttgart since 31 October 2004. A total of 2.8 million passengers have flown Germanwings to and from Dresden since 2003.

There are up to 17 flights to Cologne Bonn and 12 to Stuttgart per week in the current summer timetable. Both airports are important hubs in the Germanwings route network, offering passengers flying from and to Dresden a wide choice of connecting flights.

Germanwings is one of Europe’s most successful low-cost airlines. It flies to more than 90 destinations in Europe, Israel and North Africa, and operates a young fleet currently consisting of 32 Airbus A319 aircraft.

About Dresden Airport Terminal

With its industrial architecture, the Dresden International Airport terminal is one of the most attractive airport passenger terminals in Germany. Known as the airport with “short paths”, it has all key facilities such as departures, arrivals and a conference centre under one roof. The S-Bahn railway station in the basement was Saxony’s first underground station. A glazed, covered footbridge connects the terminal with the multi-storey car park. Via this Skywalk the shortest distance between the multi-storey and the check-in desks is only about 100 metres.

The terminal was converted from a former aviation hanger – the largest single-span industrial building in former East Germany – in a three-year construction project (1998-2001). The impressive skeleton of riveted steel girders was retained during the conversion. The terminal was officially inaugurated on 8 March 2001: a Lufthansa Airbus A320 named “Dresden” was the first aircraft to dock at the new terminal. But the official inauguration did not signal “open for business”. First it had to pass its test run. On 15 March 2001 a team of airport specialists simulated a full day of flight operations assisted by 500 extras. Finally, an Airbus A320 headed for Gran Canaria ushered in the new era of aviation in Dresden on 25 March 2001. Since then more than 20 million passengers have arrived and departed from the Dresden Airport terminal.
