Delaware North is moving a veteran sports-hospitality operator into its destination business, appointing Shawn Mattox as chief operating officer of its Parks and Resorts division. The move puts a 35-year company veteran in charge of operations across a portfolio that combines lodging, food and beverage, retail, recreation and visitor attractions at or near some of the United States’ most recognised parks and destinations.

In its October 1 leadership announcement, Delaware North said Mattox will report to Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Jamie Obletz. Mattox most recently served as vice president of operations for Delaware North Sportservice, overseeing a portfolio spanning NFL, MLB and NHL venues together with restaurant and entertainment operations.

High-volume sports operations experience moves into destination hospitality

Mattox’s background has centred on venues where service has to scale quickly around major events, launches and changing crowd levels. Delaware North said he led major venue launches, including Truist Park with the Atlanta Braves, and supported operations around events including the Super Bowl, NFL Draft, World Series and MLB All-Star Games. He has also been involved in securing contract extensions in important markets.

That operating experience has clear relevance to Parks and Resorts, where guest service depends on coordinating accommodation, dining, retail and activities across high-profile visitor destinations, often within concession-based relationships. Obletz said Mattox’s client focus, financial discipline, entrepreneurial approach and emphasis on developing teams were among the strengths expected to transfer to the division.

A broad portfolio across parks and visitor attractions

Delaware North Parks and Resorts provides lodging, food, beverage and retail services, along with recreational tours and activities, in and near destinations including Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Sequoia & Kings Canyon and Olympic national parks, as well as Niagara Falls State Park. The division operates in national parks under National Park Service concessions contracts and also operates Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex for NASA.

The appointment connects two sides of Delaware North’s hospitality business: large-scale sports venues and destination-based visitor operations. Both require coordinated staffing, service delivery, commercial discipline and long-term client relationships, while the Parks and Resorts portfolio adds lodging, recreation and public-destination operations to the mix.

Mattox said he intends to bring experience from Sportservice into the parks business while working with division and location leadership to strengthen operational performance and guest experience. He has previously collaborated with Parks and Resorts leaders on company-wide projects and has visited several properties in the portfolio.

For Delaware North, the leadership change places an executive with decades of high-volume hospitality experience into a division whose performance depends on consistent service across complex and highly visible tourism locations.
