City of Chicago announce expanded full lineup for the 40th Annual Chicago Jazz Festival from August 24–September 2 in Millennium Park

Chicago, 2018-Jul-04 — /Travel PR News/ — The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) and the Jazz Institute of Chicago are is pleased to announce the expanded full lineup for the 40th Annual Chicago Jazz Festival from August 24–September 2 in Millennium Park, the Chicago Cultural Center (78 E. Washington St.) and at venues throughout the city. With six additional days, the festival will now feature free performances in neighborhood music clubs and venues produced by Constellation Performing Arts, Elastic Arts Foundation, Green Mill Corp., HotHouse, Links Hall, Inc., Live the Spirit Residency, Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center, South Side Jazz Coalition, The Birdhouse, Inc. and The Hungry Brain. Also released is the lineup for the RoofTop Jazz in Millennium Park on Saturday, September 1 and Sunday, September 2 featuring young, up and coming jazz artists, coinciding with the City of Chicago’s Year of Creative Youth.

“In honor of the 40th Annual Chicago Jazz Festival, the event continues to build collaboration within the Jazz community and share free jazz music across Chicago,” said Mark Kelly, Commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. “The city is excited to support Jazz-presenting organizations and venues to showcase the people that make one of Chicago’s most beloved art forms possible, not just during the festival, but throughout the entire year.”

The Chicago Jazz Festival’s extended schedule will include free performances in neighborhood clubs and venues from August 24 to 29, leading up to the concerts at the Chicago Cultural Center and in Millennium Park. The additional performances offer festival audiences even more opportunities to experience Chicago’s exceptional jazz sounds at some of the city’s legendary music venues.

RoofTop Jazz: Young Jazz Lions and NextGenJazz

In honor of the City of Chicago’s Year of Creative Youth and in keeping with the festival’s tradition of nurturing young artists, on Saturday, September 1, the Harris Theater Rooftop Terrace in Millennium Park will feature the RoofTop Jazz: Young Jazz Lions. The Chicago Public School Jazz ensembels were selected during a city-wide jazz band competition that was co-hosted by the Jazz Institute of Chicago. Participating schools on Saturday include: ChiArts Jazz Combo, directed by Anthony Bruno; Morgan Park High School Jazz Combo, directed by Shemekah Nash; Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra’s CYSO Jazz Combo, directed by Pharez Whitted; Eric Solorio High School Jazz Ensemble, directed by Madeleine Mollinedo; Whitney Young Jazz Ensemble, directed by James Barbick and Kenwood Academy Jazz Band, directed by Gerald Powell. Performances begin at 11am and continue throughout the afternoon until 3:45pm.

On Sunday, September 2, the Harris Theater Rooftop Terrace hosts RoofTop Jazz: NextGenJazz, focusing on emerging Chicago musicians. Performances begin at 11:15am and continue throughout the day until 4pm. The stage kicks off with the Derek Duleba Quartet, a group of jazz guitarists from Northern Illinois University offering a fresh take on jazz standards. Cesar Martinez’s Cuicatl have been performing together since the fall of 2017 and their brand of jazz is inspired by the sounds of Mexico. Morgan Pirtle is a jazz vocalist, composer and arranger in Chicago. She recently graduated from UIC where she studied with vocalist Cheryl Wilson and has performed with Rufus Reid, Dee Alexanders, Jon Faddis and others. Greg Uhlmann’s Typical Sister is a trio of guitar, bass and drums influenced by rock music, singer-songwriters, minimalism and a rich history of American improvisers. The final set for the NextGenJazz stage is the Jahari Stampley Ensemble led by Chicago pianist and the Jazz Institute of Chicago’s 2017 Kiewit-Wang Mentorship award recipient Jahari Stampley.

Mayor Emanuel and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events have designated 2018 as the Year of Creative Youth to celebrate the city’s young artists and the mentors who inspire them. Presented by Allstate Insurance Company, the Year of Creative Youth also features youth performances and art at City of Chicago festivals, events and exhibitions throughout the year. Admission to the Chicago Jazz Festival is free. Hours for Wednesday, August 29, in Millennium Park are 6:30–9:30pm, and for Thursday, August 28, are noon–4:30pm at the Chicago Cultural Center and 6:30pm–9:30pm in Millennium Park. On Friday, September 1, through Sunday, September 3, the festival will be in Millennium Park, 11am–9:30pm.

Millennium Park – What you need to know before you go…

For the Chicago Jazz Festival in Millennium Park, some important changes are coming to improve security and the visitor experience at the park. The City of Chicago will implement a security perimeter and bag check for all concerts and events that take place in the park. New this year, outside alcohol will be prohibited in the park during the Chicago Jazz Festival. Visitors will have additional food and beverage options at various price points available for purchase inside the venue. Subject to bag search at the security perimeter, guests will continue to be allowed to bring their own food and non-alcoholic beverages to all events at Millennium Park.
