(NEWS) MALÈ, Maldives, 2026-Jul-2 — /Travel PR News/ — China remains central to the Maldives’ tourism strategy, not only because of visitor volume but also because of its role in sustaining growth at a time when global travel patterns are being affected by wider geopolitical uncertainty.
The Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Visit Maldives Corporation and key tourism partners are undertaking a high-level visit to China from 1 to 11 July 2026. According to a press release published by Visit Maldives, the delegation will visit Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu to strengthen engagement with airlines, government stakeholders, tour operators, travel agencies and travel technology companies.
The delegation is headed by Haris Mohamed, Minister of State for Tourism and Civil Aviation, while Visit Maldives is represented by CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shiuree. Other participating organisations include Maldives Airports Company Limited, Maldivian and leading tourism industry associations.
The visit comes as the Maldives works to maintain tourism momentum amid shifting international travel patterns linked to geopolitical developments in the Middle East, which have affected some transit routes and travel behaviour. In response, the government is increasing engagement with resilient and high-potential source markets.
China is currently the Maldives’ leading tourism source market, with more than 168,677 visitors recorded by the end of June 2026, representing a 19.8% increase this year.
During the visit, the delegation will take part in high-level meetings and networking events designed to promote the Maldives across leisure, luxury and emerging travel segments. The engagements are also intended to support stronger air connectivity, expand market reach and build confidence among Chinese travel partners.
The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to sustain visitor growth and meet tourism targets for the year while reinforcing the Maldives’ position as a safe and premium destination for international travellers.
