(NEWS) MIAMI, Florida, United States, 2026-Sep-16 — /Travel PR News/ — Celebrity Cruises is moving quickly from river-cruise newcomer to a sizeable European operator, with five 172-passenger ships scheduled for 2028 and more than 160 sailings designed around the Rhine, Danube and seasonal events ranging from Dutch tulip blooms to German festivals and Christmas markets.
The second full programme for Celebrity River Cruises will visit more than 50 European destinations, 24 of them new to the line compared with its inaugural 2027 deployment. The expansion follows the planned August 2027 debut of Celebrity Compass and Celebrity Seeker, with Celebrity Wanderer, Celebrity Roamer and Celebrity Boundless joining them the following year.
A new Virtuoso feature produced with Celebrity Cruises highlights four of the 2028 journeys, illustrating how the line is using seasonal timing and destination-led shore experiences to differentiate its growing river programme.
From Dutch flowers to a Bavarian summer festival
One of the clearest seasonal plays is a seven-night Amsterdam-to-Brussels itinerary aboard Celebrity Compass during the Netherlands’ spring flower season. Celebrity’s tulip-season programme incorporates the Keukenhof gardens and Dutch waterways, while the Virtuoso selection also highlights Nijmegen, Dordrecht, Maastricht and Antwerp. Departures cited by Virtuoso run from March 16 through April 27, 2028.
On the Danube, Celebrity Seeker has an August 10, 2028 departure from Budapest to Regensburg that is timed around Straubing’s Gäubodenvolksfest. The official itinerary calls at Bratislava, Vienna, Krems, Dürnstein and the Wachau Valley before reaching Bavaria, giving travellers a mix of major capitals and smaller river communities.
Celebrity is also building its destination programme around four shore-experience formats. Royal Caribbean Group says the Storyteller, Skillmaster, Keys to the City and Celebrity Takeover series range from resident-led city interpretation and hands-on workshops to self-guided exploration and private events. Examples already announced include canal exploration with a local captain in Amsterdam and shopping and cooking with a local host in Budapest.
Late-season Danube and Rhine voyages extend the calendar
Celebrity Boundless is scheduled to sail from Budapest to Nuremberg on November 18, 2028. The seven-night itinerary includes Bratislava, Vienna, Dürnstein, Melk, Passau and Regensburg before reaching Nuremberg, placing the journey firmly in Europe’s quieter late-autumn travel period.
The Rhine programme then shifts into Christmas-market season. Celebrity Roamer has an Amsterdam-to-Basel sailing departing November 25, calling at Düsseldorf, Cologne, Mainz, Speyer, Strasbourg and Breisach. Virtuoso also highlights a December 9 departure, extending the seasonal programme deeper into Advent.
These sailings sit within a much larger 2028 deployment. Celebrity’s official expansion announcement says the season will comprise more than 160 sailings and more than 50 destinations, including six Lower Danube journeys with an overnight land stay in Bucharest, more than 60 Rhine sailings and an expanded selection of Upper Danube routes.
River fleet is planned to reach 20 ships by 2031
The 2028 schedule is part of a longer growth plan. Celebrity has committed to 10 additional river ships beyond its original order, taking the planned European river fleet to 20 vessels by 2031. Construction of the programme’s first ship, Celebrity Compass, began with a steel-cutting milestone announced in January 2026.
The five named ships currently featured on Celebrity’s river fleet page adapt design ideas familiar from the company’s ocean ships to Europe’s waterways. Published features include king-size beds, open decks, hybrid-assisted propulsion on newer vessels and the Magic Edge cantilevered dining pods aboard selected ships.
Demand for the first season provides some context for the rapid scale-up, although the often-repeated “six minutes” figure needs qualification. Celebrity’s January announcement says its inaugural 2027 season sold out in under six minutes. Contemporary reporting by Cruise Critic said the initial Priority Booking Access allocation sold out in under six minutes, while the remaining public inventory subsequently sold out in under five hours.
For travellers, the more significant change in 2028 is breadth: three additional ships, substantially more destinations and a calendar that stretches from spring tulips through late-autumn cultural itineraries and winter markets. That gives Celebrity a much larger test of whether its ocean-cruise audience will follow the brand onto Europe’s rivers when the first ships begin sailing in 2027.
