bmi regional takes off with new Bristol to Hamburg route

Inaugural flight marks airline’s continued network expansion into mainland Europe

2013-02-12 — /travelprnews.com/ — bmi regional, the UK’s most punctual airline, will today (Monday, February 11th) welcome a delegation of business leaders from across South West and South Wales on the inaugural flight of the new Bristol to Hamburg route.

With thousands of bookings made since the route was announced earlier this year, the significant interest underlines the demand for the service and consolidates bmi regional’s position at Bristol following the introduction of other direct services from the city to Aberdeen and Frankfurt.

The airline will take guests to meet their counterparts in Hamburg to discuss strengthening business and tourism links between the two cities. The delegation will also be given a guided tour of the German city before returning tomorrow evening.

bmi regional is initially flying jet-operated flights five days a week between Bristol and Hamburg, increasing to 12 per week from April 8th. The arrival of the first flight will be marked with a water arch at Hamburg Airport.

Cathal O’Connell, Chief Executive, bmi regional said: “As an organisation we are committed to developing markets in areas where our customers want to travel. The launch of this new service to Hamburg and, from next month, to Frankfurt, is a continuation of our promise to serve key economic and transport hubs to multiple destinations across Europe.

“Hamburg is a key location for several major companies in the South West, such as Airbus and Imperial Tobacco. Beyond the exciting routes we have already committed to, we are currently reviewing other opportunities with the team at Bristol Airport and hope to announce additional routes in the months ahead.”

Fares on the Bristol to Hamburg, and Bristol to Frankfurt route which commences in late March, start as low as £59.99 one way.

Robert Sinclair, Chief Executive Officer at Bristol Airport, said: “The commencement of a Hamburg service, with daily flights to Frankfurt to follow in April, connects the South West and South Wales with these major German cities. Both are important business centres and the new routes are already being well supported by companies across the region keen to take advantage of the time and cost savings to be made when using their closest major airport.

“Working with airline partners to extend the route network to key business destinations is part of our overall commitment to providing vital connectivity to the regional economy.”

  • Hamburg is a major transport hub in Northern Germany and one of the most affluent cities in Europe. The city is a major tourist destination for both domestic and overseas visitors. Situated just five miles from the city centre, the international airport at Hamburg is the fifth biggest airport in Germany and the oldest in the country, having been established in 1912.
  • Frankfurt is the financial and transport centre of Germany and the largest financial centre in continental Europe. Its airport is the third busiest in Europe, behind London Heathrow and Paris Charles de Gaulle and the ninth busiest worldwide.
