ATMEX Veracruz 2012 Announces Efforts to Reduce Carbon Footprint

To compensate for greenhouse gas emissions, Mexico’s first International trade and consumer travel show on Adventure will provide funds to the conservation and restoration of the Sierra Gordo Biosphere Reserve

Boca del Río, Veracruz, MEXICO 2012-08-20 — /travelprnews.com/ —  The National Adventure Travel Tradeshow in Mexico, “Adventure Travel Mexico-Veracruz 2012” (ATMEX 2012), announced today that the event taking place on September 5-9 at the WTC in Boca del Río, Veracruz, will be a green event to support environment by compensating its carbon footprint.

Carbon footprint is the total set of greenhouse gas emissions caused by an organization, event, product or person. The emissions generated every day have a direct impact on climate change.

ATMEX will make this effort in collaboration with the Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda I.A.P., an organization that has a carbon footprint compensation program, and are aimed to protect the environment, specifically the Biosphere Reserve of Sierra Gorda in Querétaro.

“All of us involved in international nature and adventure travel have a special interest in ecosystems, in our biosphere and in its conservation,” said Professor Leticia Perlasca Núñez, head of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Cinematography of the State of Veracruz. “That is why ATMEX has been designed as a green event. We allied with Sierra Gorda’s project because it has two international certifications for their work in carbon capture.”

ATMEX is a green event of social and environmental responsibility to save and protect the environment that will offer participants the opportunity to donate funds, starting at $20.00 pesos, which will be allocated directly to the carbon capture project in the Sierra Gorda of Querétaro.

ATMEX will benefit owners who live in forested areas of the Sierra Gorda that live in extreme poverty. Through the carbon capture program, they are responsible for protecting and preserving the environment by preventing fires, avoiding cutting and logging, prohibiting hunting, grazing activities and the removal of flora.

The most effective way to offset the carbon footprint is by planting and restoring the soil, an action that reduces the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere created when trees and plants capture and store CO2 in their trunks, stems and roots.

Sierra Gorda is part of UNESCO’s Global Biosphere Reserve Network and is the area of greatest diversity within Mexico’s protected ecosystem and the second in the country in terms of global biodiversity. It is the first conservation project in the country to receive certification of two international standards in the carbon market designed to ensure ecological integrity and benefits for the communities.

ATMEX is setting an example to follow in terms of summits in Mexico and the world. This is just a small sample of what each of us can contribute to help mitigate the effects of climate change if we are willing to do so. The solutions are there.
