Amadeus opens new data centre ‘energy annexe’ to support business growth and deliver environmental gains

• New annexe represents an investment of circa 10 million EUR by Amadeus and covers some 1500 square metres

• Opening of annexe designed to support business growth in airline IT and across Amadeus’ New Businesses portfolio whilst providing environmental gains in tandem

Madrid, Spain, 2012-08-23 — /travelprnews.com/ — Amadeus, a leading travel technology partner and transaction processor for the global travel and tourism industry, today announces the opening of a new ‘energy annexe’ on the site of its existing global data processing centre in Erding near Munich in Germany.

The construction of the new annexe, which acts as an extension to the original structure of the 24 year old building, was commissioned by Amadeus in line with the recent commercial growth of the business, following a number of significant new customer wins and migrations for its airline IT business and also the launch of its New Businesses portfolio which covers the travel sectors of rail, hotel and, most recently, airport IT.

The annexe itself has two distinct levels incorporating two discrete elements – power and cooling provision – and will roughly double the data centre’s overall power and cooling capability. With this in mind, the annexe houses three new standalone diesel UPS generators and two new cooling machines. Moreover, the extension was completed in order to facilitate a more effective cooling process generally across the entire site and in turn Amadeus’ global operations and processing activity.

According to Eberhard Haag, Executive Vice President, Global Operations, Amadeus:
“In recent years Amadeus has seen inexorable growth in its airline IT business, winning new Altéa customers from all over the world. Furthermore, following the launch of our New Businesses portfolio we felt it prudent to take steps to increase and invest in not only new hardware but also the infrastructure to house it efficiently. We also want to prepare the ground for future innovation in terms of new products and services. Furthermore, we are mindful, as any business should be, of our carbon footprint and to this end our continued responsibility to both the industry and the environment more generally. In line with this, the new annexe will provide clear environmental gains, as our cooling and energy processes become even more energy-efficient”.

Amadeus expects the new annexe to have a lifespan of approximately ten years and will support its existing strategy of virtualising storage, servers, applications and cloud computing where relevant.

Amadeus’ data centre is one of the largest civil data centres in Europe and was awarded the prestigious ‘Energy-efficient Enterprise’ certification by international organisation TüV Süd in 2010. Click here for a link to an infographic detailing how the data centre in Erding works.
