airberlin wins Golden Award for its Sansibar gourmet meals at the 33rd Mercury Award Ceremony in Abu Dhabi

BERLIN, Germany, 2014-12-4 — /Travel PR News/ — airberlin came home from the 33rd Mercury Award Ceremony in Abu Dhabi with the Golden Award for the varied on-board Sansibar gourmet meals it serves. The prize, given by SIAL Group, was awarded to airberlin in the “On Board Service” category. The Mercury Award is an annual event, and is the world’s most prestigious innovation prize in the in-flight catering industry.

“airberlin has offered excellent food from Sansibar on board its flights since 2007. We continually develop the Sansibar menu, using this unique cooperation to set new worldwide standards for in-flight catering. We feel honoured that we have now received the Mercury Award for this unique concept”, says Thomas Ney, Senior Vice President Hospitality & Operations at airberlin.

Besides the free catering provided, airberlin offers a variety of high-quality Sansibar gourmet meals and snacks to offer our guests an even more individual in-flight travel experience on all short, medium, and long-haul flights. airberlin also serves exclusive Sansibar menu creations in its Business Class. A selection of wines from the famous Sansibar wine cellar and an ice cream made only from fresh milk – and not the powdered milk used in most ice creams – round off this exclusive gourmet experience above the clouds.

The popular currywurst is the top-seller on board, served around 150,000 times each year. This dish can be purchased on a whim during all flights lasting over 90 minutes. Guests are invited to place their orders from an even wider range of Sansibar gourmet menus at airberlin.com, at the airberlin Service Center or at a travel agency for short and medium-haul flights lasting over 60 minutes. Most of the gourmet menus are sold spontaneously on board. Approximately 20 to 25 percent are pre-ordered. With the gourmet menus from the Sansibar on Sylt airberlin remains the only airline in Germany that offers hot gourmet meals without the need to pre-order.
