Aberdeen International Airport carries out its ambitious £20 million transformation project with first stage underway

Aberdeen, Scotland, 2016-May-25 — /Travel PR News/ — The first phase of Aberdeen International Airport’s ambitious £20 million terminal transformation project is underway. The redevelopment will see a 50% extension of the existing terminal – the biggest upgrade since it first opened in 1977 – along with new equipment and facilities including domestic and international baggage reclaim areas.

The first stages of the plans will see temporary baggage reclaim facilities being opened, to allow construction of the new extension. The domestic baggage reclaim belt which currently resides to the right of the check-in desks in the terminal will be relocated to a temporary facility just outside the main terminal building in the lower forecourt. The international baggage reclaim belt will be moved along with the Immigration desks to a new temporary facility on stand 4.

While these changes will mean a slight alternate route for passengers reclaiming their luggage, the new temporary facilities will be clearly signposted and staff will be on hand to provide advice.

John Deffenbaugh, Head of Capital and lead for the project says: “As we know from customer feedback, the current reclaim facilities are no longer fit for purpose. The new facilities will provide bigger reclaim belts and a faster, smoother process for our passengers to collect their luggage.

This temporary layout has been implemented to ensure minimal disruption to our passengers while we work on bringing them the new modern facilities. We hope to have the work completed and the new reclaim areas ready for passengers to use by summer 2017.”

The three year project will involve the construction of a two-storey extension to the south of the existing terminal building. At ground level, the extension will accommodate all facilities for international arriving passengers as well as domestic baggage reclaim. Two business lounges will be located on the upper level, a new security search area, new immigration facilities and new retail and catering facilities within the main departures lounge.
