Aberdeen Airport’s new accessible toilet facility recognised by Changing Places

Aberdeen, UK, 2018-Oct-08 — /Travel PR News/ — A new accessible toilet facility within Aberdeen Airport’s departure lounge has been recognised by Changing Places – an official body supporting people with profound and multiple learning difficulties.

The new room, as well as a custom-built toilet block, officially opened last week within the departure lounge as part of the airport’s £20 million terminal transformation project.

The Changing Places room aims to aid passengers with a wide range of physical disabilities such as spinal injuries, muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis, who often need specialist equipment and more space in order for them to use toilet facilities safely and comfortably.

Included within the Changing Places facility is a height adjustable bench, electronic hoist, non-slip floor and privacy screens. The facility can be accessed without the need for a key, and is alarmed should any passengers require assistance.

Kevin Douglas, Terminal Operations Manager at Aberdeen International Airport said: “We’re pleased that our new facility has been recognised by PAMIS and the Changing Places Consortium. We want to make travel as seamless and safe as possible for our passengers, and the Changing Places room will make a huge difference to those who find travel a challenge. It is a fantastic addition to our upgraded departures lounge.”

Fiona Souter, PAMIS Information and Inclusive Communities Director said: “PAMIS and the Changing Places Consortium are delighted that Aberdeen Airport has installed a changing places toilet for travellers and is joining Inverness Airport and Glasgow Airport in providing these inclusive facilities.

“It is so important that Scottish airports are recognising the requirements of people with more complex healthcare needs through the installation of Changing Place toilets as this helps reduce the barriers that prevent people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), and their family carers, from travelling.”

Aberdeen International Airport was recently awarded a ’very good’ rating by the CAA in its latest Accessibility Report.
