San Francisco International Airport: Temporary Runway Closures June 25th through June 29th

Final Closures of Two Runways for Federally Mandated Work

SAN FRANCISCO, 2013-06-24 — /travelprnews.com/ — San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has announced that two runways will be closed temporarily on alternate days next week for construction activity surrounding the federally mandated Runway Safety Areas (RSA) initiative.

Upon completion of this work, the two runways, 28L and 28R, will no longer require day-time closures for the RSA work.

  • Runway 28L will be closed from Tuesday, June 25 at 12:01 a.m. and reopen on Wednesday, June 26 at 12:59 p.m.
  • Runway 28R will be closed from Thursday, June 27 at 12:01 a.m. and reopen on Saturday, June 29 at 8:00 a.m.

In the event of unfavorable wind conditions during these closures, SFO may experience some delays in aircraft arrivals during peak hours. Travelers are strongly encouraged to contact their airline regarding potential delays during this time. SFO sincerely thanks passengers for their patience during this process.

During the final closures, a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) test aircraft will conduct a series of flights over the closed runways. The flights are part of the process the FAA uses to certify navigational aids and landing systems on SFO’s runways, which were recently extended to accommodate the new safety areas.

Future closures will occur on the Airport’s second set of parallel runways in 2014.

These changes are necessary to allow for improvements to the safety features of SFO’s runways, as required under federal law. Congressional mandates require all U.S. airports to comply with the safety standards by the end of 2015.
