Marriott International announced its newest venture with the Youth Career Initiative (YCI) in Puerto Rico

San Juan, Puerto Rico, 2016-Apr-27 — /Travel PR News/ — Marriott International, Inc. (NASDAQ: MAR) announced its newest venture with the Youth Career Initiative (YCI) in Puerto Rico with training courses at three of our properties in San Juan, including The San Juan Marriott, The Ritz-Carlton San Juan and Dorado Beach, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve.

Through a global portfolio of partnerships called “World of Opportunity,” Marriott has been a catalyst for addressing rising youth unemployment with programs like the Youth Career Initiative (YCI). Through our work with the YCI program we have been able to place approximately 240 young men and women in the program in Mexico, Costa Rica and Brazil, 103 of those young men and women hired at our hotels.

“For Marriott, creating a sustainable future includes creating more jobs, training a stronger workforce and empowering local communities,” said Tim Sheldon, President of the Caribbean and Latin America, Marriott International. “Over the next five years, we plan to hire approximately 28,000 people in our growing portfolio of hotels in the region. These programs are equipping disadvantaged youth with employable skills that can hopefully prepare them for jobs with Marriott or within the hospitality industry.”

The new class of students in the YCI program in San Juan started this week, compromised of eight young men and women. The course will last for 24 weeks where they will learn skills such as leadership, teamwork, interpersonal skills, negotiation, and attention to detail. Microsoft is also providing in-kind computer training to all of the students to prepare them for the fast-paced technology of the hospitality industry.
