LOS ANGELES WORLD AIRPORTS BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS APPROVES RELEASE OF RFB FOR VAN NUYS AIRPORTS LARGE RUNWAY

Van Nuys, California – 2012-07-21 — /travelprnews.com/ —  Today, Los Angeles World Airports’ (LAWA) Board of Airport Commissioners (BOAC) approved the release of the notice of Request For Bids (RFB), inviting bids for the pavement rehabilitation project for Van Nuys Airport’s (VNY) large runway (16R/34L). Runway one six right stretches 8,000 feet and is the primary runway at VNY. The project includes rehabilitation of 6,800 feet of asphalt pavement using a combination of asphalt overlay and partial pavement reconstruction. The project also includes the widening of existing runway shoulders to meet Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) design standards, along with improvements to the aircraft run-up area and repairs to existing concrete runway pavement.

By working closely with the Van Nuys Airport Tenant Association (VNAA), the FAA and other stakeholders, various runway pavement solutions and construction phasing options were reviewed in order to mitigate operational impacts while still complying with FAA design criteria. The final design uses a combination of pavement structural sections including a large segment of asphalt overlay. Detailed construction phasing requirements include 10 days of full runway closures, 26 night-time runway closures and 65 days of shortened runway operations.

With today’s BOAC authorization, LAWA staff anticipates receiving bids by the end of August and returning to the Board in October 2012 with a recommendation for award of a construction contract. LAWA has also submitted an application to the FAA for Airport Improvement Program (AIP) Project Funds for a reimbursable amount of 95% of the construction cost to rehabilitate the runway.
