Jersey Crowned Second Best Island in Britain and Eighth in Europe

2013-03-28 — /travelprnews.com/ — TripAdvisor®, the world’s largest travel site, have announced the winners of its inaugural 2013 Travellers’ Choice Islands Awards, based entirely on feedback from millions of TripAdvisor travellers.

Jersey has great cause for celebration – the Channel Island has been crowned Britain’s second best island and even features in the European top 10 list, coming in eighth.

“Whether you’re looking for idyllic palm-lined islands, or islands that offer a more cultural experience, you’ll find inspiration in these lists,” commented Emma Shaw, TripAdvisor spokesperson. “It’s great to see Jersey recognised not only as one of Britain’s best but Europe’s too.”

Double Joy for Jersey

Although Jersey boasts much warmer climes than the rest of Britain, the island perhaps doesn’t quite reach the heights of Fuerteventura in temperature. This hasn’t stopped Jersey beating the Canary Island in the inaugural Travellers’ Choice Islands European list. Jersey came eighth in Europe’s top 10 and also celebrates second place in the top 10 islands in Britain.

David de Carteret, Director of Jersey Tourism said “We are thrilled that Jersey has come 2nd in the UK for the TripAdvisor Travellers Choice Islands Awards, but we are truly excited about being placed in the Top 10 islands list in the whole of Europe. We welcomed a lot more European travellers to Jersey last year and are expecting that growth to continue this year. With so many amazing islands to visit across Europe, this is real testament to the fantastic holiday experience that TripAdvisor travellers to Jersey have experienced.”

Located 100 miles south of mainland Britain, Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands and is one of the warmest places in the British Isles. The island boasts unspoiled landscape and a unique blend of British and French influences. Its varied coastline offers big surfing beaches and intimate rock-bound coves, clear diving waters and gently shelving sands.

How about a trip to Malta? No, ‘Isle’ be heading to Orkney

While the ideal island break for some may be one that is drenched in sunshine, the results of the Travellers’ Choice Islands Awards reveal that this may not actually be the case. Despite the complete contrast in weather, two Scottish islands, Mainland Orkney and the Isle of Skye, beat European destinations with decidedly more tropical temperatures; Island of Gozo in Malta, Zakynthos in Greece and Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands.

Scotland racked up seven awards for its islands in total, two in the European list and five in the UK list. In addition to Mainland Orkney which took first place in the UK and fifth in Europe and the Isle of Skye which ranked third in the UK and ninth in Europe, the Isle of Mull, Lewis and Harris and the Isle of Arran took fourth, fifth and sixth places respectively in the UK list of winners.
