MADRID, Spain, 2015-1-28 — /Travel PR News/ — Iberia will resume flights between Spain and Havana, Cuba, which were suspended nearly two years ago. Starting on 1 June, Iberia will operate flights on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, five weekly flights in all.

The airline also announced the launch of a new route from Madrid to the Colombian cities of Cali and Medellin, where Iberia has never flown before. The triangular Madrid-Medellin-Cali-Madrid flights will begin on 3 July, and operate on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

On both routes the Spanish airline will use its new Airbus A330s equipped with all new interiors, including business class seats that unfold into flat beds nearly 2 metres long and with direct access to the aisle; roomier seats in economy; entertainment on demand from touch screens in both seating classes, plus Wi-Fi and GSM connectivity.

The new direct flights from Madrid are timed for good connections at Iberia’s T4 hub to/from its more than 80 destinations in Spain and the rest of Europe.

Iberia’s Chairman and CEO Luis Gallego said: “I am delighted to be able to announce that Iberia is returning to Cuba. When we suspended Madrid-Havana services two years ago we pledged to return as soon as we could make the route sustainable over time, and that moment has arrived. The changes made in Iberia in the past several months allow us not only to return to Cuba, but to operate new flights to new destinations in Latin America, such as Cali and Medellin, which will strengthen Iberia’s leadership in the region still further.”

These additional destinations raise to 23 the number of routes resumed or launched by Iberia in the past year, since agreements were reached with employee unions on cost reductions and productivity hikes last February and March, and the implementation of Iberia’s Future Plan.

Iberia’s transformation process, its new cost structure, and improvements to all its services have been key to the airline’s rapid growth over the past year.

An additional factor contributing to the acceleration of the resumption of Havana flights was the flexibility, commitment, and good disposition of the Iberia pilots, thus ensuring its profitability.

In 2014 Iberia launched services to MontevideoSanto DomingoIstanbul, and Athens, while its low-cost Iberia Express unit began flying to StockholmAmsterdamHanover, and Stuttgart.

Other new Iberia routes to open shortly, and for which reservations can now be made, are to FlorenceHamburgCataniaPalermoBudapest, and Madeira, while Iberia Express will soon be serving EdinburghManchesterNaplesLondon-GatwickParis-Charles de GaulleBudapest and Verona. Its Iberia Express unit will also fly from Asturias direct the Tenerife in the Canary Islands, the company’s first domestic flight with no Madrid stop.
