LONDON, 2015-12-23 — /Travel PR News/ — The Heathrow Community Fund announced today almost £250,000 of funding for local charities and community groups to improve the environment in the area surrounding the airport.

The projects funded under “Communities for Tomorrow” programme are located in the surrounding boroughs to the airport and include:

  • Ealing’s Trees for Cities ‘Tree Champions’ –  working in partnership with Ealing Council, community and faith groups will engage local young people as volunteers to transform their local environment through planting trees at St George’s Field, Southall
  • Ealing Council’s ‘Wood End Wireless Station’ –  funding to transform this unused space into a public park including new accessible paths network, natural play area, nature conservation improvements and community events.
  • Richmond’s River Thames Boat Project ‘Accessing the Thames – Eco Active’ project – developing education and learning activities for summer day cruises for people with disabilities, to reach young people, adult learners and volunteers.
  • The Conservation Volunteers ‘Hounslow Heath – Restoration and Rarities’ – A community orientated project to educate local schools and local residents on the rare habitats and creatures that Hounslow Heath holds. Conservation volunteer work will restore the heathland habitats and create a bee bank in the shape of one the heathland’s most famous residents the adder Vipera berus.
  • Colne Valley Park CIC ‘Colne Valley Park Visitor Centre refurbishment’ – More than 2 million people visit the Colne Valley Regional Park each year. Funds will support a wide programme of work to refurbish the visitor centre and improve accessibility to disabled visitors and those with babies and young children.
  • Egham Cricket Club ‘Raise the Roof’ – funding to repair and replace part of the roof of the clubhouse.
  • Groundwork South ‘From Waste to Wildlife’ project in Windsor and Maidenhead?– Children will explore their school grounds and Braywick Nature Reserve to find out what creatures live there. They will design and create from rubbish creatures that will be displayed in their habitats and will make mini-films about them

Dr. Rebecca Bowden, Director of the Heathrow Community Fund says:

“I am very proud to conclude 2015 with some great news for this round’s recipients, and confirm our support for innovative projects that will have real and positive results for the environment around the airport.

All of the groups funded under the ‘Communities for Tomorrow’ have one thing in common: a unique, first-hand perspective of local environmental issues and have practical solutions to address them. Their enthusiasm and dedication is infectious and I look forward to seeing the results of their work.

The Heathrow Community Fund has supported hundreds of local groups this year, in addition to the recipients of today’s grant awards, and I want to thank Heathrow Airport, our airline and local partners for their support in making this happen.”
