The Architecture of Luis Barragán
One very interesting experience is visiting the Luis Barragán masterpieces. Architect Luis Barragán was one of the most important Mexican architects of the twentieth century and the only one to obtain the Pritzker Prize, in 1980. His constructions frequently are visited by students and university professors of architecture from around the world.
The Convent of the Capuchinas is one of his masterpieces. Another is Gilardi House, widely recognized as one of the few commendable examples of contemporary religious architecture, and one of the last projects of Barragán, designed it for art collector Francisco Gilardi. Probably the most photographed house of all that he designed, Gilardi House is an experiment on the path of the sun.
His own home and studio Casa Barragán was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004 because it “integrates both modern and traditional artistic trends in a new format.”
